From Monferrato Vineyards to Courmayeur’s Alpine Charm

From Villa Menaluna, Courmayeur makes for a perfect day trip or overnight escape. Just a scenic two-hour drive brings you into the heart of the Aosta Valley and to the foot of Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc for the French amongst us), where the dramatic Alps rise against crisp alpine air. Visiting in autumn is particularly enchanting: the slopes are starting to be painted in warm golds and deep reds, trails are peaceful, and the majestic Monte Bianco dominates the horizon in serene grandeur. The quieter season allows for a more intimate experience of the valley, without the crowds of winter ski tourists.

Courmayeur itself is effortlessly chic, blending small-town charm with refined elegance. Stylish boutiques, inviting cafés, and artisan shops line the streets, making wandering through town a pleasure at any pace. The culinary scene is equally compelling, reflecting the crossroads of Italian, French, and Swiss influences. From hearty polenta and mountain cheeses to rich fondue and delicate pastries, each meal tells a story of the region’s layered traditions. Local wines and charcuterie perfectly complement the flavors of the Alps, making lunch or dinner a true highlight of the visit.

Visiting in late September or early October still brings intense sunshine (bring the SPF50!) as you’re already over 1200 metres above sea level here, so don’t be fooled by the cooler temperatures: when the sun is out, its absolutely glorious and the ideal weather in which to enjoy the ‘apres ski’ the town is known for. Find a cafe with a table in the sun and just soak in the air and the warmth.

For ultimate relaxation, the thermal spa at Pré-Saint-Didier is a must. Its warm, mineral-rich waters offer restorative comfort while framed by stunning alpine views, especially magical in autumn. My advice is avoid Saturdays or a Sunday morning, when it’s likely to be heaving with day-trippers from France and Italy. I returned on a Monday to a much a calmer crowd and more space to truly relax. Time it well with a sunny day and you can’t go wrong.

Whether you choose a day trip or a leisurely overnight stay, Courmayeur combines natural beauty, refined style, and culinary richness, offering a refreshing contrast to the rolling vineyards and gentle hills of Monferrato. It’s an experience that delights all the senses.
